A word from the students at Oakley
Posted by Kevin Salwen on 04.21.2011Share

Yesterday, I wrote about the reactions of 8th grade students at Bear Creek Middle School to the Power of Half programming. At our other school, Oakley Elementary in Union City, we are working with the 4th graders to help them learn their capacity to feel powerful through giving.

This time, counselor Dale Oldham and I decided that rather than interview the students and ask for their reactions, we should let them speak directly. Those perspectives will show up in the comments section below this post.

Hi. I am Kayla Willis. Thanks to the PoH I now realize you have to give to live.

To all you beautiful students at Oakley ES --Jaquan, Jamaya, Makaili, Jawau, Lorenzo (and anyone else who is involved) - I just want you to know that some middle-aged lady in New Jersey is LIT UP by your generosity and intention to help less fortunate people in your community. YOU are the people who are going to make the world a better place in the future, because you're already doing it RIGHT NOW. Never underestimate your power to help, you power to make a positive difference in the world, your power to inspire others to be compassionate, understanding individuals. I don't know any of you, but sitting here alone in my kitchen on a Saturday night, you are inspiring me to to keep up my own "power of half" commitments and to always share what I have. You guys are AWESOME! I hope you feel proud of yourselves, you deserve to. I am grateful for and inspired by you story, and I want to keep hearing more!
