Who Are We Overlooking?

More than a year ago, I heard Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy speak. They are the real parents in the real Blind Side, the folks who took in Michael Oher and helped him develop into the successful young man he is today (Oher will earn nearly $4 million this year from the Baltimore Ravens as a superstar offensive lineman).

Something Leigh Anne said that day burrowed deep into my soul. "We were driving along and there, walking on the side of the road, was the largest human you've ever seen. And he was invisible, cars driving by, people not seeing him or choosing to not help if they did see him. He was completely invisible. But we picked him up and he turned out to be arguably the best player in the National Football League."

She continued, "So, who else is out there being invisible? The girl with the cure for cancer? The greatest musician? Who?"

I thought about her words again today, when I read this incredible story of Davion Only, an orphan boy in Florida who walked into a church last Sunday, boldly stood before the congregation and asked to be adopted into a good home. Before that day, he was invisible. Now he stood before the parishioners of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church and announced, "I'll take anyone. Old or young, dad or mom, black, white, purple. I don't care. I would be really appreciative."

Doesn't it make you wonder: What can we all do for the invisible?
